Girls Soccer

Port Angeles 3, Olympic 2

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders stopped a 15-year losing drought to the Trojans, who entered Thursday’s contest at Civic Field in first place in the Olympic League 2A Division.

Port Angeles’ victory pulled the Riders (5-1-0, 7-2-0, 15 points) past Olympic (5-1-0, 8-2-0, 14 points) and into second place, within one point of league-leading North Kitsap (5-1-0, 6-2-1, 16 points).

“We played a really quality game against the eighth-ranked team in the state,” coach Scott Moseley said. “The win wasn’t a fluke — it was built on hard work as a team and some individual excellence.”

Millie Long scored two goals for Port Angeles, her eighth and ninth of the season, in the win.

“Both of Millie’s goals demonstrated her speed and craftiness in dribbling to goal,” Moseley said.

Her first goal tied the score at 1-all in the first half, just one minute after Olympic’s Meleina Wright’s 25-yard free kick nicked in off the far post and in the net.

Long dribbled past two defenders and beat the Trojans’ goalkeeper with a shot that also deflected off the goal and in.

Despite scoring chances, the teams went to halftime locked at 1-1.

“PA keeper Madi Roening had two saves on low shots, while the Riders were not able to get three shots past Olympic’s keeper,” Moseley said.

Long put Port Angeles ahead for good with a score in the 51st minute.

“She beat four defenders with some deft dribbling and converted a strong left-footed shot for the 2-1 lead,” Moseley said.

Kyrsten McGuffey earned the game winner (her 8th of the year) from 30 yards out. Her free kick barely skidded between the keepers legs on the wet grass for a lead that held, in spite of a late Olympic goal.

McGuffey and freshman Bailee Larson notched assists for the Riders.

Moseley also noted the play of the whole defense, and singled out Delaney Wenzl and Roening in goal in particular.

The Riders man-marked the league’s leading scorer, Hannah Troy with Wenzl, who effectively shut down the speedster throughout the game. Roening had 13 saves for the night, including a late second half fingertip save that deflected off the post into her hands.”

“The win sets up an exciting second half of the season as [we] seek to earn [our] first league championship in 18 years,” Moseley said.

Port Angeles hosts rival Sequim (0-6-0, 1-7-1) on Tuesday.

Kingston 5, Sequim 4

It’s been a tough season so far for the Wolves, with two one-goal losses and two losses in penalty kicks. Vandervelde said the Wovles’ players are remaining resilient.

“I think the second half is going to be better for us,” he said.
