PREP BRIEFS: Port Townsend wrestlers place at Kelso, Sultan meets

KELSO — The Port Townsend girls wrestling team finished 44th out of 84 teams at the Kelso Tournament this weekend, while the Redhawk boys finished ninth out of 20 teams at the Sky Valley Tournament in Sultan.

The two-day event had schools from Washington, Oregon and Idaho competing. The Redhawks’ Kalista Hill was the top placer for Port Townsend, finishing sixth. She won her first two matches at 135 pounds before losing and going to the consolation bracket, where she won two more matches by pins.

“I am so proud of Kalista. This was a big-time tournament and she stepped up her game and delivered. I believe she wrestled eight matches in two days to get that medal … that’s a hard earned medal,” said coach Steve Grimm.

Grimm said that Port Townsend’s Ally Bradley at 105 pounds and Veda Dosey at 155 pounds each came within one win of earning a medal. Bradley won three matches in a row after losing her first match of the tournament. Dosey also won three matches on the day.

Port Townsend’s Emerald Bailey at 140 pounds also won the first match of her wrestling career.

The Port Townsend boys had three placers at Sultan with Redhawk Jesus Duran coming in first at 132 pounds, pinning four wrestlers on the day.

“He was pretty dominant all day. I don’t think anyone even scored a point on him in any of his matches,” Grimm said.

Brothers Ryan and Kyle Caldwell each placed third at 182 and 195 pounds respectively.

“We had a good showing. We were in sixth as a team for most of the day. Our guys are turning heads, we had almost the whole team in position and close to medals. One more win for them and we have five thirds and probably a sixth-place finish as a team,” said Grimm.

The Redhawks’ next meet is a final home dual at 6 p.m. Thursday against Bellevue Christian.
