GOLF: Options to hit up the links on Black Friday

A PAIR OF post-turkey golf tourneys are set to tee it up Friday, one with a definite focus — Peninsula Golf Club’s 27th annual Apple Cup Tournament — and another more concerned with getting some exercise after Thursday’s feast.

Most know the stakes of Friday’s 111th Apple Cup football game between No. 16 Washington and No. 7 Washington State — the Pac-12 North Division and a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game is up for grabs.

If the game has you nervous with anticipation, 18 holes of golf will serve as a solid distraction.

The two-person scramble format event begins at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Peninsula Golf Club in Port Angeles.

An eight-stroke differential is allowed between playing partners and scores will use 35 percent of a combined team handicap.

The cost is $40 for members, $60 for the public, and will cover play, gross and net merchandise awards, KP and long drive contests, appetizers following play, two drink tickets per player and a square on the football board.

To get in on the fun, phone Peninsula at 360-457-6501 or visit the pro shop.

Post-Turkey Day at SkyRidge

SkyRidge Golf Course in Sequim will host its annual Post-Turkey Day Tourney on Friday, a two-person scramble and better ball format event.

A 9:30 a.m. shotgun start is planned, barring any frost.

A minimum of three drives must be used per player during the front nine scramble from the green tees, and three gross scores per player are required from each partner for the back nine better ball from the silver tees.

Women will play from the purple tees on both nines.

Entries are $80 per team and cover green fees, gross and net prizes, KPs, LPs and lunch following play.

A honey pot is available for $20 per team and carts are $15 per seat.

For more information or to sign up, phone 360-683-3673 or stop by the clubhouse.

November to remember

Discovery Bay Golf Club general manager Randy White checked in with a report on the course’s condition.

“November has been very kind to Discovery Bay Golf Club,” White said. “Power carts are still allowed on the fairways using the 90-degree rule. We will continue this policy until weather dictates otherwise. We are still rolling the greens twice a week, along with mowing on a regular basis, so they are fast and true.

“I can’t remember the golfing conditions being this good in late November, so come out and take advantage of all our specials such as twilight rates starting at noon.”

For more information, phone Discovery Bay at 360-385-0704.

Deals aplenty

Area golf courses will be active in the holiday shopping frenzy beginning Friday.

Pro shops at Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim and Peninsula Golf Club will both offer 23 percent off all merchandise (excluding golf clubs) Friday through Monday.

And for every $100 spent at either shop, players will get an entry into a drawing for four free green fees at Peninsula or Dungeness.

Peninsula will offer $30 green fees with use of a cart Saturday through Monday.

And Cedars at Dungeness has $22 walking rates and $15 cart rentals per person from Friday through Monday.

Port Ludlow deal

Port Ludlow Golf Course will have a Cyber Monday deal where shoppers can get a $100 gift card for $80 online at portludlowresort.com/cyber-monday-cd.

The card can be used at the course, in Niblick’s Restaurant or around the Port Ludlow Resort.

Tiger vs. Phil

Friday also is the day of “The Match,” the 18-hole, $9 million winner-take-all match between Phil Mickleson and Tiger Woods.

The exhibition event will be held at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas and shown on pay-per-view for $19.99.

Tiger and Phil will even wager during the match, which, even with Woods’ 2018 resurgence, probably had much more demand 10 to 15 years ago.

At a Tuesday press conference in Las Vegas, it was Mickelson who lobbed the first wager onto his opponent’s side of the fence.

“I feel like the first hole is a great hole for me,” the lefthander said of the short par-4 opener. “I’m willing to risk $100,000 that says I birdie the first hole. That’s how good I feel going into this match.”

He then turned to Woods and explained, “Now, you don’t have to take it…”

Come on, did you really think he’d turn it down?

Instead, Woods answered with a two-word response to get the betting started: “Double it.”

Good times. I’ve got Tiger trampling Mickleson for the cash.
