SEQUIM — Sequim entered the fourth quarter tied with North Kitsap, but the Vikings were able to pull away down the stretch for a 61-53 win, handing the Wolves their first loss of the season.

The defeat also knocked Sequim out of first place in the Olympic League 2A Division.

“The game was a battle to the very end,” said coach Linsay Rapelje.

“Jessica Dietzman and Hope Glasser added solid defense, while Kalli Wiker kept us in the gme with her great shooting,” Rapelje said.

Wiker led the team in scoring with 17, while Glasser and Jayla Julmist each added 14. Julmist also had 11 rebounds and four rebounds.

The Wolves (3-1, 6-1) look to get back on the winning track with a home game at 7 p.m. against Olympic (2-1, 4-3) on Friday in what will be a battle to stay in second place in range of league-leading Port Angeles.

Mikkiah Brady and Millie Long led Port Angeles with 10 points each. Bailee Larson scored seven, Madison Cooke six and Jaida Wood had six on a pair of 3-pointers.

“Jaida Wood’s two early three-point shots got us a quick lead and set a good tone for the night,” said coach Michael Poindexter. “Our press was improved tonight and forced quite a few early Olympic turnovers.

“Our shooting percentage wasn’t particularly good [30 percent], but our overall effort was good on both ends of the floor and we did a great job of getting offensive rebounds and pushing the ball well in transition,” Poindexter said.

With Sequim getting knocked off by North Kitsap, the Riders (3-0, 5-1) remain alone in first place in the Olympic League 2A Division. Port Angeles next plays at Bremerton (0-5, 0-8) at 7 p.m. Friday.
