GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: North Kitsap tops Port Angeles, teams now tied for league lead. Sequim, Neah Bay and Port Townsend all win

POULSBO — Port Angeles ceded solo control of the top spot in the Olympic League 2A Division girls basketball standings with a 69-63 loss at North Kitsap on Friday.

The Roughriders (7-1, 13-3) and Vikings (7-1, 10-6) are now tied for the league lead and have split their two-game season series against each other, with four regular season games left.

“On the whole, our offense was effective with inside scoring (54 percent shooting) and a decent showing outside (37 percent on 3-point shots), but we would have benefitted from more dribble penetration and scoring attempts inside,” coach Michael Poindexter said. “North Kitsap scored well in transition against us and at times with screens on the back side of our zone. North Kitsap also did a nice job getting second-chance points on offensive rebounds.”

Port Angeles weathered a rough patch in the latter half of the first quarter, but were buoyed by Madison Cooke’s 11-second quarter points to tie the game at 37-37 at halftime.

“The game was a see-saw affair after that,” Poindexter said.

“North Kitsap had a 64-58 lead when Mikkiah Brady hit a three-point shot to get us within 3 at 64-61 with 2:08 left in the game. The Vikings’ Raelee Moore countered with a 15-foot jumper, and then Eve Burke hit a lay-in off an assist by to make it 66-63 with 1:13 left. We switched to a man-man defense but gave up a 3-pointer to Alicia Goetz with 50 seconds left, and that was all the scoring for the night.”

Port Angeles hosts North Mason (1-8, 8-9) on Tuesday.

Tenino 38, Forks 37

FORKS — The Spartans had their hearts broken when an improbable half-court shot in the final seconds proved to be the difference in an Evergreen League loss to Tenino.

Fork was clinging to a 37-35 lead, headed to an apparent victory, when the Beavers’ Charlie Letts hit the shot from half-court with six seconds left.

Coach David Hurn said it will be a life lesson for his players.

“We played a really good ballgame,” Hurn said, pointing out that earlier in the season, Tenino beat Forks by 19.

“This is why it’s so important for kids to play sports. Sports provide an opportunity to grow. This is something they will always take with them. I’m excited to see how they respond,” Hurn said.

“This is something that happens in life and life’s not always fair,” he said.

Rian Peters led the Spartans with 14 points, while Chloe Leverington had nine points.

Forks (1-4, 6-9) will try to bounce back with a nonleague game at Clallam Bay (3-2, 8-6) at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

REDMOND — The Port Townsend basketball girls won their second straight game, getting 19 points from Gina Brown in a 38-18 win over Bear Creek.

Port Townsend also got eight points from Izzy Hammett. After a rough 1-10 start to the win, the Redhawks have won two straight with a 32-24 win over Klahowya on Tuesday.

“They are super positive. They’re really happy about playing basketball. This whole season has been about learning to work hard,” said coach Cameron Botkin.

Botkin said Klahowya and Bear Creek were two different kinds of games. Klahowya was within five points and pressured late, but the Redhawks finished strong. She said Bear Creek was a little lower level of team than the Eagles, so a lot of Redhawk bench players got into the game.

Botkin also said that while Sorina Johnston didn’t score against Bear Creek, her play at point guard was pivotal for both wins.

Port Townsend (1-3, 3-10) will play at Crescent (0-5, 0-7) on Tuesday.
