Forks girls go to state

WOODLAND — The Forks girls qualified as a team to go to the state 1A cross country meet by finishing third at the District 4 1A girls meet at Lewis River Golf Course on Saturday.

Six Spartan girls had individual qualifying finishes at the meet as Forks places a sextet of runners in the top 19. The top 21 runners go to state. Five of those six girls ran personal bests while qualifying for state.

Leading the way for the Spartans was Enid Ensastegui, who finished fifth with a personal best time of 20 minutes, 16 seconds. Also running personal bests were Madelyn Archibald (11th), Madison Carlson (14th), Karen Ensastegui (17th) and Melisa Galindo (19th). Marissa Bailey also finished 13th, though it was not a personal best.

The Forks boys will send at least one runner to state, as well. Samuel Gomez finished 11th with a time of 17:39, good for state. Luis Perez from Forks finished 22nd, just out of the 21 top finishers from District that automatically qualify for state. However, there are additional allocations to the state meet based on time, so he or other Forks boys could qualify for state.

As a team, the Forks boys finished fifth in the district, thanks to four finishes in the top 26 runners.
