BOYS SWIMMING: Riders qualify for state in five events

RENTON — The Port Angeles boys swim team qualified in two more events at the state swim meet during the West Central District III meet at Hazen High School.

The Roughriders are competing in one relay event, three individual events and diving at the state meet to be held at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way beginning Friday.

Qualifying for state at the WCD III meet was the Riders’ 400-yard freestyle relay team that earned an automatic allocation with a time of 3 minutes, 49.59 seconds. The team of Taylor Martin, Henry Shaw, Alex Hertzog and Cameron Butler came in sixth.

Hertzog also earned a state allocation with a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.75.

Port Angeles finished seventh out of 17 schools in the final team ranking with 78 points. Sequim came in 11th with 49 points and Crescent picked up five points.

Port Angeles finals results:

• 200 Medley Relay (Alex Hertzog, Cameron Butler, Henry Shaw, Taylor Martin), eighth, 1:55.77

• 200 Individual Medley — Butler, fourth, 2:07.02 – State qualifying time

• 1 meter diving — Andrew Methner, fourth, 267.40 – Previously qualified for state

• 100 Butterfly — Hertzog, seventh, 1:01.58

• 500 Freestyle — Butler, third, 5:08.23 (state qualifying time)

• 100 Backstroke — Hertzog, sixth, 1:03.75 (state allocation)

• 400 Freestyle relay (Martin, Shaw, Hertzog, Butler), sixth, 3:49.59 (state allocation)

In addition, Micah Scott, a diver for Crescent, has been practicing with the Port Angeles High School team this season. He placed eigth in diving (241.5 points) at the WCD III meet.

In the preliminaries Friday, these Port Angeles swimmers were not able to advance to Saturday’s finals.

• 200 Freestyle — Martin, 13th, 2:04.42.

• 100 Butterfly — Shaw, 17th, 1:06.67.

• 200 Freestyle relay (Nate Toscano, Johnathan Meastas, Haylen Gerhard, Carter Droz), 15th, 1:55.37.

• 100 Backstroke — Martin, 14th, 1:06.28
