ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Alma Mendoza, Sequim wrestling team

Sequim’s Alma Mendoza last month finished second in the 155-pound weight class at the Mat Classic state wrestling championships.

Mendoza rebounded from a fifth-place finish at regionals to have a dominating state tournament. She won three matches by the scores of 2-0, 11-0 and 17-1. It took a comptitor from a 4A school, Kamiak, to finally beat her in the championship.

Mendoza placed three straight years at state, finishing seventh the year before at 140 pounds and seventh in 2015 at 125 pounds.

For her exploits on the mat, Mendoza was also named co-MVP among Olympic League 1A/2A girls.
