AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Sequim’s Beuke wins third straight Pac-12 championship as member of UW women’s crew

Beuke wins third Pac-12 championship

GOLD RIVER, Calif. — Sequim rower Elise Beuke won her third straight Pac-12 women’s championship as a member of the University of Washington’s second varsity eight boat.

Beuke, a senior at UW, and her fellow crew teammates won the Pac-12 championship on May 19 and are now preparing for the NCAA championships that will be held Friday through Sunday in Indianapolis. Beuke was a member of UW’s national championship team in 2017 and national championship runner-up team in 2018.

The UW women won the Pac-12 title with 39.5 points over Stanford, which had 39. Rowing in terrible conditions in wind and rain in Northern California, Beuke’s second varsity eight boat at the Pac-12 championships beat Stanford by more than 7 seconds. The UW team’s winning time was 7 minutes, 18.303 seconds.

Beuke graduated from Sequim High School in 2015 and rowed for the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association.

Sequim’s Barry ninth

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Sequim High School graduate Alex Barry, now competing at Western Washington University, came in ninth in the javelin at the NCAA Division II Track and Field championships held at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Barry became a two-time All-American, adding his ninth-place finish to his fourth-place finish at nationals last year.

Barry entered the championship meet seeded 17th. He threw 200 feet, 4 inches in his third and final attempt in preliminaries, moving on to the finals, where he fouled twice and passed on his third throw to finish ninth.

Barry ends his WWU track career as a three-time competitor at the state meet, a three-time All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference selection and two-time Division II All-American. He is second all-time at WWU in the javelin with his throw of 224-4 last year at the NCAA Div. II championships.

PA records fall

TACOMA — Two Port Angeles High School records were broken at the state 2A track and field meet at Mount Tahoma High School this weekend.

Millie Long’s first-place time of 44.65 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles broke a school record Long already held.

Lauren Larson ran a time of 10:54.11 in the 3,200 meters, good for second place in the state. That broke the record of 11:00 set last year by Gracie Long at the state track meet. Long also finished second in this event.

Larson also finished second in the 800 and third in the 1,600 as the Port Angeles girls track team finished second in the state. Larson’s times in both events were the second-fastest in Port Angeles High School history.

Cal Ripken 12U

PORT ANGELES — Lions edged Norwester 4-3 in Cal Ripken 12u baseball this weekend. Lions received a strong outing from Cole Beeman on the mound. He went 5 2/3 innings and struck out seven. Offensively, Lions got three hits from Rylan Politika and a two RBI singles from Aidric McBride.

Norwester received a strong performance on the mound from Kody Williams, who went six innings while striking out seven. At the plate, Norwester got two hits each from Phoenix Flores, Logan Slankard and Tate Alton.

16U softball

PORT ANGELES — Kiwanis beat KONP 21-6 in 16U softball. For Kiwanis, Maliah Wilson pitched all four innings, striking out seven and walking four. Rianne Rodocker went 3 for 4 with a home run. Gracie Townsend went 2 for 4, scoring three runs, while Wilson went 2 for 3.

For KONP, Estella Wasankari went 2 for 3 with a double and scored three runs. Grace Possinger went 2 for 3 with a double and Mary Cochran was 2 for 2.

12U softball

PORT ANGELES — Boulevard Wellness beat Tranco 18-4 in 12U softball action this weekend. Malena Marquez went 2-3 with a single and a double for Boulevard while Kenzie Moses scored twice for Tranco.
