WEEKEND: Jazz master, local trio to play Saturday on Port Angeles campus

Jazz artist John Stowell will play Peninsula College's Maier Performance Hall this Saturday night. ()

PORT ANGELES — A jazz artist with “a brilliant national and international reputation,” according to Peninsula College Music Department head David Jones, will join a trio of local jazz men for a concert at the college’s Maier Performance Hall this Saturday night.

John Stowell, a guitarist who’s played alongside Lionel Hampton, Billy Higgins, Richie Cole and many other stars in the jazz firmament, will step onto the stage at 7 p.m. with Jones beside him on piano, Terry Smith on drums and Ted Enderle on the stand-up bass.

Tickets, at the door only, are $12 for general admission and $5 for students with identification for this Peninsula College Music Department presentation. Maier Hall, the small auditorium, is on the main campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

“This is a unique opportunity to hear one of the Pacific Northwest’s finest jazz musicians,” Jones said.

“It will really be an evening of chamber jazz, along the lines of Modern Jazz Quartet or David Brubeck Quartet.” Stowell will also play some solo selections.

The artist tours and teaches around the world, and enjoys praise from fellow guitarists such as Herb Ellis, who said: “More guitarists would play like John Stowell, if they knew how.”

Finest musicians

As for Smith and Enderle, Jones calls them two of the finest musicians in the Pacific Northwest.

“Their collective groove,” he said, “is always a treat for the audience and for the other musicians on the bandstand.”
