UPDATE: Six bodies found in crashed plane off Vancouver Island

Six bodies — including those of two from California — have been found inside a float plane that crashed Sunday afternoon at Saturna Island’s Lyall Harbour east of Vancouver Island.

Saturna is just across the international border northeast of the San Juan Islands.

The Times Colonist of Victoria reports that a Canadian Coast Guard dive team found the aircraft with the bodies inside shortly before 1 a.m. today at a depth of about 35 feet, said Troy Haddock, maritime co-ordinator for the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria.

The dive team had a difficult time finding the plane because of near-zero visibility in the water and strong currents, he said.

Two people, a male pilot and a woman passenger, were rescued moments after the Seair Beaver de Havilland crashed at 4:12 p.m. Sunday.

They were taken to Victoria General Hospital and are in stable condition, according to Shannon Marshall of the Vancouver Island Health Authority.
