SEQUIM — Prospective candidates for public office can hear from those who have been through the election process during a League of Women Voters of Clallam County forum Saturday.
Incumbents and former incumbents will talk about making the decision to run for office from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Sequim Public Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.
“It’s not the nuts-and bolts of how to run a campaign,” said Judith Parker, one of the organizers of the presentation.
“It’s decision points that a person would want to consider as they think about filing for candidacy.”
Fifty positions are open in Clallam County in the November general election. Forty-eight are open in Jefferson County.
The candidate filing period will be from Monday, June 6, through Friday, June 10.
Invited to make presentations Saturday are:
■ Virginia O’Neil, Sequim School Board vice president, whose term expires in 2013.
■ Cindy Kelly, Port Angeles School Board president, whose term expires in 2013.
■ Carol Boardman, former Port Angeles City Council member and former Clallam County commissioner.
■ Laura Dubois, Sequim City Council mayor pro tem and former Sequim mayor, whose term expires this year.
■ Max Mania, Port Angeles City Council member, whose term expires in 2013.
■ Mike Doherty, Clallam County Board of Commissioners chairman, who was re-elected to another four-year term in November.
Those who attend the forum will be able to ask questions of the presenters.
“They will explore the issues involved in running for elected office and encourage local citizens who are informed about local issues and committed to community values and the ethical responsibilities of public service to seriously consider elected service,” Parker said.
Questions a prospective candidate might want to consider before filing include how much time the job will take, what assignments are included in the job and the amount of money needed to run a campaign, Parker said.
“We want to encourage people and try to give them firm ground so that they can come up with a well-considered decision,” she said.
