Sequim road chip seal work to begin Monday

SEQUIM – A $270,674 citywide chip seal project will begin Monday.

The project, funded by city’s transportation benefit district, will continue through Saturday. Work will occur in three distinct areas.

The first is in northeast Sequim, bordered by East Fir Street on the north, North Brown Road on the east, East Washington Street on the south and North Sunnyside Avenue on the west.

A second segment of roadway to be chip-sealed runs from East Silberhorn Road near its intersection with Quiet Place eastward to South Seventh Avenue and then northward on South Seventh Avenue to McCurdy Road just south of U.S. Highway 101.

The third segment of road is South River Road from the Highway 101 interchange southward to a point north of Lorraine Drive.

All work will be completed during the daylight hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Drivers can expect temporary roadway closures, lane closures and pilot cars.

The road will remain open to residents living adjacent to the project work zone.

The work will be conducted by Sierra Santa Fe Corporation of Ridgefield.

Chip seal work is dependent upon good weather conditions, so this schedule is subject to change, city officials said.

Chip seal work, consists of street cleaning, asphalt oil application, a thin layer of aggregate, rolling, more sweeping and a “fog seal” coat of asphalt oil which results in a refurbished street with an extended life of seven to 10 years, city officials said.

Roads are typically drivable within 24 hours of being chip-sealed, they said, adding that drivers should refrain from sudden starts or stops or speeding within the first two weeks to allow the chip seal to set properly.
