PORT ANGELES — Leaders of nonprofits across Clallam County filled the Board of County Commissioners chambers Tuesday morning as commissioners proclaimed this coming Tuesday #GivingTuesday.
In Jefferson County, United Good Neighbors began Give Jefferson, with an online giving catalog at https://www.givejefferson.org/ in October and the effort will continue through the end of 2018.
Giving Tuesday is an international day that encourages philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. It is held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year.
Commissioner Mark Ozias said he has been speaking in front of chambers and services clubs to discuss the roles that nonprofits play in Clallam County.
“I’ve come to understand if we did view our nonprofit community as an economic sector parallel to all the others, it would dwarf every other economic sector we have here in Clallam County,” Ozias said.
In Clallam County more than 45 local nonprofits have united as the Olympic Peninsula Nonprofit Alliance and are fundraising together during the inaugural #ClallamGives.
Leslie Lauren, executive director of the Olympic View Community Foundation, said that donations from the public will be matched so far up to $7,500. Nonprofits hope to raise $20,000 in matching funds, she said.
