Property tax payment deadline looms

The second half of the year’s property tax payments are due Oct. 31.

Mailed payments must be postmarked, put in a drop box, or brought to a county treasurer’s office by that date to avoid penalty and interest charges.

Mail dropped in a U.S. postal mailbox on Oct. 31 could result in a postmark of Nov. 1 and would be considered delinquent.

To ensure a timely postmark, have the post office hand-stamp the envelope.

Taxpayers who would like receipts should include self-addressed envelopes with their payments; receipts then will be mailed to them.

Taxes may be paid in person from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Jefferson County Courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St., Port Townsend or at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Checks also can be deposited in drop boxes.

In Clallam County, the drop-off location is the gray drop box located within the circular drive at the courthouse.

Jefferson County has four drop boxes. They are in the rear parking lot of the courthouse; at the 1st Security Bank branches in Port Townsend, 734 Water St., and in Port Hadlock, 10 Oak Bay Road; and the Sound Community Bank in Port Ludlow, 9500 Oak Bay Road.

Treasurer’s offices can accept most credit and debit cards, either at the counter or online at http://www.clallam.net/ Treasurer in Clallam County and at http://www.co.jefferson.wa.us/329/Treasurer or by phone at 1-877-812-8072 in Jefferson County.

A 2.5 percent fee is charged by the service provider for credit card payments.

Electronic checks also may be used to make payments, with a service fee charged.

Payments postmarked or dropped off after the deadline will be delinquent and subject to 1 percent interest in November.

On Dec. 1, an additional 1 percent interest and 8 percent penalty will be charged on the amount due.
