Port Angeles, Sequim, Neah Bay football teams ranked in state polls

SEATTLE — Could Port Angeles and Sequim be headed on a collision course toward another Olympic League football championship game this fall?

If the state’s sportswriters are right on in their first poll, that answer may be yes.

The Port Angeles Roughriders and Sequim Wolves found themselves ranked in the top 10 of Class 2A in the initial state poll released by The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Sequim was ranked No. 7 in 2A thanks to a 3-0 start that included a 29-22 win over 1A powerhouse Meridian two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Port Angeles landed at No. 10 after beginning the year 3-0 with wins over 3A Chief Sealth, 1A Forks and 3A Bremerton.

Neah Bay also made an appearance in the 1B poll, getting ranked third at 2-1.

This marks the second year in a row that Port Angeles and Sequim were ranked in the same poll by AP sportswriters.

Port Angeles rose as high as No. 7 in the 2A rankings last fall after an 8-0 start.

Sequim reached a No. 6 ranking following its 41-0 drubbing of the Riders at the end of the regular seasons and a 2A state preliminary playoff win.

As was the case last year, the two will meet in the final week of the regular season, this time on Oct. 28 in Sequim.

Last year’s game drew a record crowd to Civic Field of more than 4,200 spectators.
