PORT ANGELES — Clallam County has awarded a bid to a Port Angeles contractor to reconstruct the narrow and bumpy upper section of Lower Elwha Road.
The three commissioners Tuesday awarded a $1.28 million bid to Bruch &Bruch Construction Inc. to rebuild a 0.86-mile portion of the road between its southern terminus at Edgewood Drive to Kacee Way.
Crews will realign, regrade, widen and repave the road with hot mix asphalt and move utility lines underground.
The Kacee Way-Lower Elwha Road intersection will be reconfigured to allow a free, sweeping left turn for motorists heading north from Lower Elwha Road onto Kacee Way.
When’s construction?
Construction is scheduled to occur from mid-May through October, county officials said.
The project is funded by state gas tax revenue and a 10 percent county match.
Six contractors bid on the Lower Elwha Road project. The prices ranged from Bruch &Bruch’s low bid to a high bid of $2.58 million.
The engineer’s estimate was $1.4 million, County Engineer Ross Tyler said last week.
In a separate project, the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe is removing hazardous trees along Kacee Way.
As a result, Kacee Way will be closed to through traffic on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. until April 28, tribal Community Development Director Carol Brown said.
Local traffic, Clallam Transit buses and school buses will be allowed to access Kacee Way.
Drivers are advised to use Lower Elwha Road as a detour.
