PHOTOS: Volunteers clean up homeless encampment in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Helping Hands member Bruce O’Rourke drags a tent filled with garbage from a litter-strewn homeless encampment next to Tumwater Creek on Saturday. O’Rourke said this encampment, one of several across greater Port Angeles, contained at least five separate living areas that had sprung up since the area was last cleaned up in August. A collection of cannibalized parts from bicycles lies among bags of refuse collected Saturday at a homeless camp next to Tumwater Creek south of the Eighth Street bridge in Port Angeles. Patty Pastore, a member of the homeless-assistance work group Helping Hands, shows a container of used syringes collected by the group while cleaning up Port Angeles on Saturday, while Amie Woods stands among piles of garbage collected from a single tent site near Tumwater Creek.
