NEWS BRIEFS: Young students’ artwork on display in downtown Port Angeles … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Artwork by young students is hanging in downtown businesses through May 31.

The seventh annual “Young@Art” Exhibit for Port Angeles students in kindergarten through sixth grades is sponsored by the Port Angeles Downtown Association and its businesses, the Juan de Fuca Foundation and the Port Angeles School District.

Artwork will be displayed during the annual Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts.

The artwork in the non-juried show can be seen at participating businesses on Front, First, Oak, Laurel and Fourth streets, and Railroad Avenue.

Outdoor yoga events slated for PA, Sequim

The public is invited to participate in three outdoor yoga and hiking events with Julia Buggy held in Port Angeles and Sequim.

The events will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

A $10 donation is suggested for each class.

On June 10, the first event, “Deepening Connection to Place,” will be held in Port Angeles.

The specific location of the event will be available after registering.

On July 8, “Awakening Your Awareness” will be held at the Dungeness Recreation Area, 544 Voice of America Road, Sequim.

On Aug. 12, “River Exploration and Flow” will be held at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim.

Class sizes are limited to 15 people, so event organizers encourage those interested to register in advance.

Proceeds will benefit the Olympic Nature Experience, North Olympic Land Trust and Dungeness River Audubon Center.

Air Force grads

SAN ANTONIO — U.S. Air Force Airmen Richard S. May and Devin W. Tong graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

The airmen completed an intensive eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate degree in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force.

May is the son of Carmen L. Czachor and Andrew T. May of Port Angeles.

He is a 2014 graduate of Port Angeles High School.

Tong is the son of Jeanie M. Brown of Sequim.

He is a 2015 graduate of Sequim High School.

PA teacher’s retiring party set June 10

PORT ANGELES — A retirement celebration will be held for Olympic Christian School teacher Lorie Oakes at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 10, at Independent Bible Church.

The celebration will include dessert, presentations and memories at the church’s Family Life Center, 116 E. Ahlvers Road.

Oakes began teaching at the school during 1992 and has educated more than 400 kindergarten and first-grade students since that time, according to a news release.

This is an invitation for all past and present students, families and friends to attend this special day.
