NEWS BRIEFS — Port Angeles public hearing set Tuesday on utilities . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — The City Council will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.

The hearing will be held to receive public input on the proposed electric, water and wastewater utility rate adjustments, according to a news release.

Candidate forum

PORT ANGELES — The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe will sponsor a candidate forum at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Elwha Heritage Center, 401 E. First St.

Candidates for three Clallam County offices have been invited to participate.

The forum is open to the public and will be moderated by Bertha Cooper of Sequim, a columnist for the Sequim Gazette.

Members of the audience will be invited to asked questions of the candidates.

The candidates will present as follows:

■ 2:30 p.m.: Sheila Roark Miller and Mary Ellen Winborn, candidates for director of community development.

■ 3:30 p.m.: Rick Porter and Cathy Marshall, candidates for District Court 1 judge.

■ 4:30 p.m.: William Payne and Mark Nichols, candidates for prosecuting attorney.

■ 5:30 p.m.: Reception with light refreshments.

The public will be able to speak with the candidates during the reception.

School Board meet

JOYCE — The Crescent School Board will hold a special meeting for a training session on open public meetings at 5:15 p.m. today at the Crescent School library, 50350 state Highway 112.

The special meeting will include a webinar and will be followed by a regular open session.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. to approve student handbooks for the 2014-15 school year and hear reports from student representatives on preparations for the coming school year and from Athletic Director Dave Bingham.

Mars book signing

PORT ANGELES — Author A.M. Mars will be at Swain’s General Store, 602 E. First St., for a book-signing event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.

Mars, a resident of Port Angeles, will be available to sign copies of her book Star of Aion.

Family Fun Fest planned

CARLSBORG — The Pumpkin Patch, located on the corner of U.S. Highway 101 and Kitchen-Dick Road, will host a free Family Fun Fest from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Face painting, tug-of-war, water games, jumphouses, hay rides, hot dogs and more will be offered.

The event is sponsored by The Crossing Church.

Photo club presents

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Photoclub will give a presentation at the community center, 620 Tyler St., from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Photographers David and Casey Gluckman will present a program based on their January trip to Arizona. They will discuss cameras and techniques to help improve nature-based travel photos.

Using a travelogue they created, they will project the images and explain why they were taken and what could be done to make them better.

They also will talk about documenting outdoor nature events using a sparrow mist netting study as an example.

David is a Nikon professional wildlife photographer who has specialized in bird photography for the past eight years.

Casey photographs primarily landscapes, flowers and vegetation.

The event is free and open to the public.

Singles’ dinner out

PORT TOWNSEND — The Senior Singles will hold their October meeting at the Belmont Restaurant, 925 Water St., at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20.

The city’s only remaining 1880s waterfront restaurant and saloon features fresh Northwest seafood and other options.

To reserve a spot, phone the group hostess before 1 p.m. at 360-437-9935 no later than Oct. 13.

Note whether you wish to be a passenger or driver.

The group encourages carpooling as a way to get to know other members.
