Firearms safety

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office will hold two additional firearms safety courses this year: this Saturday and Saturday, Sept. 24.

Both will be free to Clallam County citizens.

The first course was held June 4.

Training Lab’s Master Instructor Sgt. Randy Pieper and firearms instructor Howard Blair used the firearms simulator to teach the course.

The three-hour classes include instruction on firearms safety and practices, use of target practice scenarios and several shoot and no-shoot scenarios.

Each scenario is based on actual incidents involving law enforcement.

Participants use patrol rifles, handguns and Tasers modified for use in the simulator; it uses lasers instead of live rounds while keeping the recoil similar to live fire.

This allows the participants to experience the weight and feel of firearms during the training.

Those interested in attending a course must email Administrative/Community Policing Coordinator Lorraine Shore at lshore@co.clallam.wa.us.
