NEWS BRIEFS — Final run of Sequim’s ‘Les Miserables’ starts tonight . . . and other news

SEQUIM –– This weekend is the last to catch Peninsula Family Theatre’s acclaimed production of “Les Miserables.”

“Les Mis” concludes its three-week run with a trio of shows at 7 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday at the auditorium at Sequim High School, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

Tickets are $20 premium, $15 adults, $12 for seniors and children, and $10 for the balcony.

“It’s a huge production, but it’s a really powerful story,” said Robin Hall, director.

“The voices are amazing and powerful, and I think everything has fallen into the right place to put on a really great show.”

They also will be sold at the door.

Free jazz set outdoors in PA next month

PORT ANGELES — Two free jazz concerts will be held at Peninsula College on Monday and Aug. 12.

The Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of music professor David Jones, is bringing back its summer concert series.

Both performances are open to the public.

The Monday Jazz on the Lawn concert celebrates hot summer days and begins at noon on the Peninsula College green, behind the PUB just east of the M Building.

In case of rain, the concert will be moved indoors to the PUB entertainment stage.

The Aug. 12 Summer Quarter Jazz Concert is a celebration of cool nights and even cooler jazz, and will be held in the Maier Performance Hall at 7 p.m.

Both concerts will feature vocalist Robbin Eaves with a 12-piece jazz band.

Music by Thelonious Monk, Freddie Hubbard, Mongo Santamaria, Elmo Hope, Oliver Nelson, Johnny Griffin and Oregon will be heard, along with some classic jazz standards by Billy Strayhorn and Jerome Kern.

A special bonus feature of both concerts will include several gems from the post-bop era (1955-1970), including the original versions of Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments” and Freddie Hubbard’s “Skydive.”

Raising poultry talk

SEQUIM — Victoria Miller, author of Pure Poultry: Living Well with Heritage Chickens, Turkeys and Ducks, will present her book and talk about the basics of raising poultry at Nash’s Farm Store, 4681 Sequim-Dungeness Way, at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The talk is free and open to the public.

Miller is a writer, photographer and homesteader who lives off the grid on a 40-acre farm in the foothills near Sequim with her husband, David.

She began raising heritage-breed chickens in 2007, followed by turkeys and ducks in 2008.

She and David have been selling their organic chicken and duck eggs to a local restaurant and seasonally at several retail stores in Sequim since spring 2008.

In her talk, Miller will tell attendees how to evaluate pasture space, deal with predator issues and house and feed a heritage poultry flock.

Sequim book group to meet at the library

SEQUIM — A Second Saturday Sequim Book Discussion will be held at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9.

The event is free and open to the public.

My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier will be discussed.

Registration is not required, and drop-ins are welcome.

2nd Tuesday group

PORT ANGELES — The 2nd Tuesday Book Discussion Group will meet at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12.

The event is free and open to the public.

The book discussion group examines themes and characters in literary fiction, readable nonfiction and works by Northwest authors.

At this event, the group will discuss The Boys in the Boat by Daniel Brown.

Student graduates

SEATTLE — Courtney Ellen Bruch, a 2010 graduate of Port Angeles High School, recently earned a Bachelor of Arts in near Eastern studies, culture and civilizations from the University of Washington.

She is the daughter of Kurt and Sheryl Bruch of Port Angeles.
