NEWS BRIEFS: Field carrier landing practice scheduled this week in Coupeville … and other items

COUPEVILLE — Field carrier landing practice operations for aircraft stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island are scheduled to occur at the outlying field in Coupeville on Wednesday afternoon.

Aircraft carrier-based flight training also will occur at Ault Field from evening to night Monday through Thursday.

The schedule is subject to change to meet mission requirements.

Cafe takeover

JOYCE — The Crescent School senior class will take over the Blackberry Cafe from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The seniors will take orders and bus tables at the cafe, 50530 state Highway 112.

The class is raising money for transportation costs for a June graduation trip to California.

Summer classes

SEQUIM — The Clallam County Genealogical Society will offer its genealogy summer school program Saturday, June 10.

The class will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road.

The cost for the program is $30 to genealogical society and Sequim museum members, while nonmembers and late registrants will be charged $35.

The program’s theme will be “Going Deeper into Your Genealogy” and will discuss topics including census records, Ancestry.com, Findmypast.com and DNA research.

Jim Johnson, Association of Professional Genealogists Puget Sound Chapter president and director of the Heritage Quest Library, will provide information about new databases on Ancestry.com and demonstrate how to effectively use them.

Genealogical society member Marolyn Russell will speak about how to critically analyze DNA results before changing a family tree.

Event organizers ask that attendees bring a sack lunch.

Early registration for the class ends Wednesday, June 7.

Breakfast fundraiser

PORT TOWNSEND — The Hospice Foundation for Jefferson Healthcare will host its seventh annual breakfast fundraiser from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at Fort Worden Commons.

Event organizers advise attendees to arrive at 8 a.m. for the breakfast at the commons dining room, 200 Battery Way, Building 210.

Tickets are $25 per person.

Jill Buhler, hospital commissioner, will present “My Experience with Hospice”; Dr. Joe Mattern, chief medical officer at Jefferson Healthcare, will present “Update on Palliative Care Services and Hospice at Jefferson Healthcare”; and Bill Beezley of East Jefferson Fire-Rescue will present “Legacy Giving Program for the Hospice Foundation” during the fundraiser.

The deadline for reservations is Friday, June 9.

Rummage sale

SEQUIM — Trinity United Methodist Church will hold its annual rummage sale June 2-3.

The sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, June 2, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at the church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

Featured at the sale will be tools, jewelry, furniture, appliances, clothing, books, kitchenware and toys.

Proceeds will benefit the church’s community projects.

Public servants awarded

SEQUIM — The International Footprint Association Olympic Peninsula Chapter 74 recently honored 14 Clallam County law enforcement and public safety organizations at its 10th annual Officer of the Year awards banquet.

Program Chair Gene Mattson and chapter President Maura Mattson presented special recognition plaques to officers at the Sequim Elks Lodge.

Recipients were selected by their peers, whom have excelled in their careers as a top performer and for their dedication, professionalism and exemplary service to the community they serve, according to a news release.

The agencies recognized were Sequim Police Department; Clallam County Sheriff’s Office; Port Angeles Police Department; Forks Police Department; Port Angeles Fire Department; Clallam County Fire Districts 2, 3 and 4; Washington State Patrol; U.S. Border Patrol; Clallam Bay Corrections Center; U.S. Coast Guard; Elwha Klallam Police Department; and PenCom.
