PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles resident Terri Wood has received the Summer 2014 Green Thumb Award from the Port Angeles Garden Club.
She was chosen by members of the club.
Wood has been renovating her home and garden for more than 30 years. Her antique front and back doors, with a ring bell in the center, come from a Texas ranch.
She and a friend stripped the outside boards of the house to expose the lumber underneath. They refinished it and stained the cedar shakes with scalloped cuts on the top level and diamond cuts on the
middle level.
Wood’s country garden has a large petunia basket that hangs next to an old-fashioned mailbox and cutting shears on the porch.
Next to her antique door is a woodcut boot overflowing with alyssum and pansies. Hydrangeas and hostas are under the large front windows.
Along the side of her home are window flower boxes overflowing with lobelia, nasturtiums and sweet peas. Underneath are several peony bushes.
In front, Wood continues her cottage-style garden with wildfire in front, lipstick salvia, roses, marigolds, a butterfly bush in the side yard and flower baskets hanging from tree limbs.
She has marionberry bushes in remembrance of her grandmother and gooseberry bushes in memory of her grandfather.
Her quince and herb garden have reached maturity and are ready for an overhaul. Wood is still digging up fingerling potatoes she planted last year.
In the side lot is a large black walnut tree and a hazelnut tree. Both are full of ripening nuts.
Wood also received a framed certificate and a scrapbook filled with photos of her garden.
