EYE ON CLALLAM: Clallam to mull opioid litigation

Clallam County commissioners will discuss a potential lawsuit against manufacturers and wholesalers of prescription opioid painkillers Monday.

The work session will begin at 9 a.m. in the commissioners’ board room (160) at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Two attorneys from Seattle-based Keller Rohrback, LLP, pitched the litigation at the Clallam County Board of Health meeting Jan. 16.

The Board of Health unanimously recommended that the commissioners retain the law firm and join the lawsuit.

Other agenda items for the work session include:

• A discussion on safety barriers for the Eighth Street bridges in Port Angeles.

• A call for a hearing on the proposed surplus of forfeited vehicles.

• A request for proposals for a new election ballot tabulation system for the Auditor’s Office.

•  A request for proposals from vendors qualified to prepare a general sewer/wastewater facilities plan and other work for the Clallam Bay/Sekiu sewer systems.

• A call for bids for an annual crushed rock product supply contract.

• A contract amendment with the state Recreation and Conservation Office for the 2015-2017 North Olympic Peninsula Lead Entity project.

• A review of funding recommendations of the Homelessness Task Force Review Committee.

Commissioners will hold a continued work session at 1 p.m. Monday to hear a briefing on the Shoreline Master Program update.

The board will conduct its regular business meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Action items include:

• An agreement with the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe for services being performed under the Department of Health Pollution Identification and Corrections Plan.

• An agreement with KONP Radio for an exhibit to be displayed at the Clallam County Home and Life Show March 10 and 22.

• A contract amendment and grant agreement with the state Military Department.

• An agreement with the Clallam Conservation District to provide renewable resource conservation planning and implementation.

• Proposal openings for architecture and engineering consulting services and services for developmental disabilities capacity building.

• A resolution adopting a disaster airlift response plan as an annex to Clallam County’s Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan.

Port of Port Angeles/Clallam County

Port of Port Angeles and Clallam County commissioners will hold a joint meeting to hear quarterly updates from the Composite Recycling Technology Center, Small Business Development Center and Clallam County Economic Development Corp. at 11 a.m. Monday.

The joint meeting will be in the port commission meeting room at the Port of Port Angeles building, 338 W. First St. Port Angeles.

Other agenda items include an update from the state Department of Natural Resources and a presentation on the forest products industry and the economy of Clallam County.

Public Utility District

Clallam County Public Utility District commissioners will consider establishing the district’s 2018 budget and rate adjustments at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

The meeting will be in the Lake Crescent Boardroom at the main office, located at 104 Hooker Rd. in Carlsborg.

Other agenda items include approval of a $62,500 bid to RJ Services, Inc., for a Carlsborg sewer connection.

Port Angeles city

The Port Angeles City Council will conduct an executive session to discuss collective bargaining and a work session to discuss the proposed 2018 work plan at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The special meeting will be in the City Council chambers at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.

The executive session is expected to run for about 15 minutes.

Sequim city

The Sequim City Council will conduct a planning session from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The session will be at the Sequim Transit Center, 190 W. Cedar St.

The council and city staff will consider goals for the coming year from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., including a working lunch.

From 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. is planned a discussion on the budget process and staff will provide initial thoughts regarding the goals in the final hour of the session.
