ENTERTAINMENT BRIEFS: Local artist set for state show in Bremerton . . . and other items

NOTE: “Today” and “tonight” refer to Friday, Jan. 22.

BREMERTON — Pamela Dick of Sequim is one of the artists selected to show her work in the statewide CVG — aka Collective Visions Gallery — competition and show opening this weekend.

Dick’s fractal art will appear among 132 pieces — chosen from nearly 800 entered — at the gallery at 331 Pacific Ave. in downtown Bremerton.

Leilani Lewis of the Northwest African American Museum in Seattle is the event juror, soon to choose the recipients of $7,500 in cash prizes awarded in several categories. The show also has a $300 People’s Choice Award.

“Some [of the artists] are well established professionals and others are emerging talents in the world of art,” Lewis noted.

“What an incredible experience to go through all those images.”

On opening day this Saturday, the CVG Show will have its first public viewing from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It will then be open Sundays noon to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition stays up through Feb. 28.

For information, phone 360-377-8327 and visit www.CVGShow.com.

‘Buried Child’ carries on

PORT TOWNSEND — Sam Shepard’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Buried Child” is on now at the Chameleon Theater, 800 W. Park Ave., with evening shows and matinees through Jan. 31.

“Child,” the tragicomic story of an American farm family and its secrets, is presented by the One-Time Players of Port Townsend, with a cast that includes Lawrason Driscoll, Michelle Hensel, Peter Wiant, Scott Nollette and Katie Kowalski.

Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays at the Chameleon, which is a cozy venue.

To reserve seats, visit OneTimePlayers.org; tickets are $15, while no one will be turned away for lack of funds. For low-income reservations, phone director David Hillman at 360-385-6207. If still available, tickets will be sold at the door.

Fiddle, by ear in Sequim

SEQUIM — The local chapter of the Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association will offer a free learn-to-play-by-ear session at the Sequim Library meeting room this Wednesday evening, Jan. 27.

This 90-minute class, to start at 6:30 p.m., is the first of a series.

The sessions are geared toward players ages 21 and younger who have played a melody instrument for one to two years. Everyone is welcome to listen, though, or play backup with acoustic instruments.

The Old Time Fiddlers play traditional and dance tunes, often learned by ear rather than from sheet music, on a regular basis in Clallam County.

For details, phone 360-477-9373.

Pourhouse pair Saturday

PORT TOWNSEND — Hoot and Holler, an old-time music duo from Boston, is coming out to the Pourhouse, 2231 Washington St., to fill it up with fiddle, guitar and banjo music this Saturday night.

The frolic will start at 9 p.m. as fiddler and singer Amy Alvey and singer-guitarist Mark Kilianski, both alumni of Boston’s Berklee College of Music, step up. There’s no cover charge at this 21-and-older venue, and more about the band is found at fisforfiddle@gmail.com.

Seeking young ‘Stars’

PORT TOWNSEND — Registration is open for musicians, dancers, singers and other young performers hoping to enter the 2016 Kiwanis Stars of Tomorrow talent show, to be held March 20 in Port Townsend.

Performers may be soloists, duets, trios and small groups, while the show has three divisions: the non-competitive presentation category for elementary school students, the junior class for performers in seventh through ninth grades and the senior division for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Auditions and interviews will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 11 at Blue Heron Middle School, 3939 San Juan Ave., to determine which acts will be invited to participate in the show. Public-, private- and home-schooled students throughout East Jefferson County are encouraged to try out.

Applications and program guidelines are available for download from the Kiwanis Club via www.ptkiwanis.org, while more information is available from Mary Crozier at maryc@ptpc.com or 360-531-0200.

Forms should be mailed to Kiwanis Stars of Tomorrow, c/o Mary Crozier, P.O. Box 489, Port Townsend, WA 98368, postmarked by Feb. 5 or received, completed and signed, at the auditions on Feb. 11.
