Clallam inks routine pact for election ballots

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County has approved a routine contract for the printing and mailing of August primary election ballots.

Commissioners Mark Ozias and Randy Johnson voted Tuesday to approve the $29,650 agreement with K&H Printers.

Commissioner Bill Peach was absent because he was serving as vice chair of the state Board of Natural Resources in Olympia.

Clallam County has contracted with Everett-based K&H for the printing and mailing of primary and general election ballots since May 2008.

Ballots for the all-mail primary will be mailed July 12. Ballots will be due Aug. 1.

County Auditor Shoona Riggs told commissioners Monday that the latest agreement was “pretty standard.”

“It’s not quite a countywide election, but there are quite a few candidates that filed,” Riggs said.

Primary contests have taken shape in races for Port Angeles and Forks city councils, and county fire districts 2 and 3.

In other news from Tuesday’s meeting, County Engineer Ross Tyler announced that the Old Olympic Highway-McDonald Creek bridge replacement project was on schedule to begin in mid- to late June.

Old Olympic Highway will be closed at the bridge site near Agnew during the estimated eight-month construction. Drivers will use U.S. Highway 101 as a detour.

Commissioners awarded a $3.07 million bid to Orion Marine Contractors Inc. of Tacoma for the bridge replacement project May 16.

The road department will announce the start date after holding a pre-construction conference with the contractor.

“We will make sure and publish as soon as we know the closure date,” Tyler told commissioners.

“One important point is that we have been in discussions with the [Sequim] School District, and we will not be closing that section of road until after [June] 16, which is the last day of school. So it will be sometime after the 16th.”

Built in 1957, the 24-foot-wide McDonald Creek bridge will be removed and replaced with a 40-foot-wide bridge.

The new bridge will match the width of recently improved sections of Old Olympic Highway.
