Clallam County Sheriff’s Office chain gang busy clearing roadways

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chain Gang picked up 1,420 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Mount Pleasant, 260 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Shore Road and 100 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Karpen Road during the week of June 3-7.

Notable items found include a boat, a truck push bar, plastic cans and a dolly.

Crew members assisted the road department by trimming weeds from 8,073 feet of guardrails on Dan Kelly, Eden Valley, Blue Mountain, O’Brien, Lees Creek, Marsden and North Barr roads and the Old Olympic Highway.

Crew members worked on Lake Farm Road, brushing and chipping debris, pulling approximately 6000 Scotch broom plants and placing and compacting asphalt.

Crew members also brushed a tree hanging into the county right-of-way on Matsom Road..

Crew members trimmed weeds and cleared brush on Finn Hall and North Barr roads.

Crew members also assisted the U.S. Forest Service by brushing 2.6 miles of Snyder Road.

During the week of June 10-15 crew members cleaned 680 pounds of litter from 8.5 miles of state Highway 112.

Notable items found include nine needles, two tires, a wooden cabinet, plastic garbage can lids, a sectional sofa and treated lumber.

Crew members also picked up 1,440 pounds of litter from two illegal dumpsites on Little River Road, 460 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Joyce Access Road, 750 pounds of litter from two illegal dumpsites on Fish Hatchery Road and 170 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Old Deer Park Road.

Crew members assisted the road department by trimming weeds and clearing debris from storm water overfills at Mount Pleasant, North Larch and Gasman roads and from a ditch on Henry-Boyd Road.

Crew members trimmed weeds along West Duvall Road and at the Elwha Interpretive Center.

Crew members cut up and removed a fallen tree on Mount Pleasant Road and removed sand that had built up on Black Diamond Road.

Crew members trimmed weeds along 4,279 feet of guardrails along Bogachiel Way and Undie, Whitcomb-Dimmel, Maxfield, Lake Pleasant and Mary Clark roads.

Crew members also trimmed weeds from 2,354 feet of guardrails along Snider, Pavel and Mani-Smith roads.

During the week of June 17-21 crew members cut back blackberries and Scotch broom at 292 Heuhlslein Road for vehicle removal by Code Enforcement.

Crew members assisted the Forest Service by brushing and chipping debris on Dan Kelly Road.

Crew members also felled trees, chipped debris and trimmed weeds in the county ditch on Pearce Road.

Crew members trimmed weeds around equipment and fields in the Mount Pleasant county pit.

So far this year the chain gang has cleaned 130.3 miles of roadway, picked up 7,070 pounds of roadside litter, picked up 134,210 pounds of illegal dumpsite litter, trimmed 41,932 feet of guardrail and pulled or sprayed approximately 31,580 Scotch broom plants.

For the forest service, the chain gang has so far this year cleaned 2.6 miles of forest service roads or trails.
