AAUW announces scholarship application deadline

PORT TOWNSEND — The University Women’s Foundation of Jefferson County, the philanthropic affiliate of AAUW Port Townsend, will offer about $50,000 in scholarships this spring to women from East Jefferson County.

Applications are due March 10. Finalists will be interviewed in April and awards will be announced in May.

UWF offers the following scholarships and awards for 2018-19:

• The Elmira K. Beyer Endowed Scholarship, in the amount of $11,000, will be awarded to an East Jefferson County woman who has completed at least one year of university study and wishes to continue her education.

• An Academic Endowed Scholarship in the amount of $8,500 will be offered based on the same criteria related to academic performance, financial need, and educational and professional goals.

• New this year are two awards of $7,000 each, which will be given in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Port Townsend branch of AAUW.

• Also new is an award of $2,500 in memory of Constance Anna Pash to a woman pursuing a STEM degree with an emphasis on math.

• The UWF Environmental Scholarship will provide $3,000 to a local woman who plans to study environmental science with an interest in climate change.

• The Lisa T. Painter Scholarship in the amount of $2,500 will be offered to a woman who wishes to study law, medicine/health care, or fine arts.

• Three scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded to local young women graduating this year from Port Townsend, Chimacum, and Quilcene High Schools and going on to college.

• Nine STEM awards of $100 each will be presented to high school women from Port Townsend, Chimacum, and Quilcene who excel in science, technology, and math and are nominated by their school counselors.

• UWF/AAUW will send several middle-school girls to Tech Trek, a week-long science and math summer camp held on a Washington university campus.
