Bike team forming

PORT ANGELES — An informational meeting for a new coed mountain bike team for riders in sixth through 12th grades will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The meeting will be at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

No mountain biking experience is required to join the North Olympic Mountain Bike team, which will serve the Sequim, Port Angeles and Joyce areas as a Clallam County 4-H club.

Contra dance

PORT ANGELES — Black Diamond Dance will host a contra dance from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday.

The dance will take place at the Black Diamond Community Center, 1942 Black Diamond Road.

Admission is by donation — $8 suggested for adults, $4 for anyone younger than 18.

PORT ANGELES — David George Gordon will present “Sasquatch: Man-Ape or Myth?” at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Gordon will present the same lecture again at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Gordon is the author of “The Sasquatch Seeker’s Field Manual.”

The lecture will discuss the data already collected from Sasquatch sightings, rules of critical thinking and the scientific method.

Attendees will be encouraged to share tales about their Sasquatch sighting experiences.

Pruning lecture

PORT ANGELES — Clallam Master Gardeners will present “Pruning for the Dormant Season” from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday.

‘Awake’ screening

FORKS — Peninsula College invites the public to a screening of “Awake: A Dream from Standing Rock” at 7 tonight.

The screening will be at the Forks branch of the college at 481 S. Forks Ave.

The free screening is in honor of Indigenous Peoples Day, a holiday meant to celebrate and honor the indigenous peoples of America.

“Awake” captures the story of Native-led defiance at Standing Rock, N.D., that changed the fight for clean water, the environment and the future of the planet.

A panel discussion and question-and-answer session with local community members who participated in the resistance at Standing Rock will follow the film.

SEQUIM — The Department of Social and Health Services’ Mobile Community Services Office will be in Sequim from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. today.

Residents can apply for cash assistance, basic food assistance, medical assistance and the Medicare Savings Program.

They can also drop off paperwork, complete an eligibility review or mid-certification review or make changes to an existing case.

Free Boating Clinic

SEQUIM — The North Olympic Sail and Power Squadron (NOSPS) will present a free boating clinic from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The clinic will be at the Gathering Place, 135 Fairway Drive.

The public is invited to this clinic on the use of automatic information systems.

The clinic will be conducted by Ray Madsen, who will discuss what AIS is, what it does, how it works, and most importantly how to interpret the information and apply it while at the helm of your boat.

Sharp will present information related to the activation of the 9-1-1 system, when to call 9-1-1 and what to do until the ambulance arrives.

Astronomy lecture

SEQUIM — The Sequim Bay Yacht Club will host a presentation by John Goar from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Goar will speak about astronomy on the North Olympic Peninsula at the yacht club at John Wayne Marina at 2577 W. Sequim Bay Road.

Goar has provided free public telescope programs on Hurricane Ridge for more than 8,000 viewers since 2010.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend library will start a six-week workshop about creating an autogeography at 6 p.m. Thursday.

According to a press release, an autogeography is an autobiography told with geographic locations instead of one told with events.
