A plant sale, a tree giveaway and a benefit concert are among upcoming activities on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Veteran services

FORKS — Multiple services through the Voices for Veterans’ Operation Stand Down will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

Veterans can access these services at the Forks Elk Lodge, 941 Merchants Road.

The one-day event provides direct services and connects veterans to more than 25 organizations assisting in medical-dental, housing, employment, veteran benefits, legal aid, counseling, haircuts, pet supplies and new clothing.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

All funding is received through donations and grants, with all funds used for supplies, equipment and clothing.

Free transportation will be provided by Clallam and Jefferson County Transit.

Survivor breakfast

FORKS — A Relay for Life Victory Brunch for cancer survivors is planned from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Fire victim benefit

CLALLAM BAY — A dart tournament and silent auction will be held from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Clallam Bay Inn to benefit recent fire victim Cara Cowdrey.

Sign-ups for the tournament are $20 at the inn at 31 Frontier St.

All proceeds will go to the Cara Cowdrey Rebuild Fund.

NEAH BAY

DSHS office

NEAH BAY — A Department of Social and Health Services mobile community service office will be at the Makah Senior Program, 341 Bayview Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Those interested can apply for cash assistance, basic food assistance and medical assistance from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Additionally, an eligibility review, mid-certification review and changes to an existing case can be completed at the mobile office.

JOYCE

Benefit breakfast

JOYCE — The public is invited to Crescent Bay Lions Club’s benefit breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday.

The breakfast will be at the Crescent Bay Lions Club clubhouse, 181 Holly Hill Road off state Highway 112.

The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children 12 and younger.

The menu includes eggs cooked to order, hot cakes, French toast, biscuits and gravy, hashbrowns, ham, bacon, sausage, coffee, tea and orange juice.

All proceeds will go to the Crescent Bay Lions for their community projects.

Plant sale

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Garden Club’s 26th annual spring plant sale is set from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Featured at the event at the Port Angeles Senior & Community Center, 328 E. Seventh St., will be perennials, bulbs, trees, shrubs and houseplants as well as vegetable and herb starts.

A $5 raffle will award a two-person trip to Victoria that includes an MV Coho ferry round trip and overnight stay at the Grand Pacific Hotel, entrance to Butchart Gardens, transportation and high tea.

A $1 raffle for items including a Victorian hanging basket, covered bridge bird feeder, chair planter with fairy garden, wooden bench and designer garden sign will be held.

Raffle winners do not need to be present to receive items.

All proceeds will benefit scholarships for local high school and community colleges, civic beautification, community donations and other local programs.

Tree giveaway

PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Timber Action Committee will host its annual tree giveaway event from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Approximately 5,000 Douglas fir and hemlock seedlings will be given away by donation at the Green Crow parking lot, 727 E. Eighth St.

The trees offered at the event are not ornamental trees and will grow very large, according to a press release.

Safety fair

PORT ANGELES — The public is invited to Peninsula College’s free health and safety fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Featured at the event will be multiple local agencies, which will be in the Pirate Union Building on the Port Angeles campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

The fair aims to make students and community members aware of personal health and safety issues, as well as the community resources available to address them.

The event will include interactive displays, such as a training simulator to demonstrate law enforcement tactical training, and live self-defense techniques.

Pro bono lawyers

PORT ANGELES — Clallam-Jefferson County Pro Bono Lawyers will present a free legal advice clinic from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The event — to be held at The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave. — is intended to help the public address legal issues in one-on-one consultations with volunteer lawyers.

Volunteer attorneys will provide and assist with completing advance directive forms including a power of attorney for finances, power of attorney for medical and a health care directive.

There is an anticipated high demand for this clinic, so attendees are asked to arrive on time.

Dance lessons

PORT ANGELES — A series of five dance lessons will begin Monday at Scandia Hall.

Instruction will be at the hall at 131 W. Fifth St.

Dance instructors Darlene and Michael Clemens will teach beginning quick step at 6:30 p.m. and beginning cha-cha at 7:30 p.m.

The cost for each class is $8 per person. If the payment is made for the entire series at the beginning of the first lesson, the cost will be $35.

Quilts on display

PORT ANGELES — There are 115 quilts on display in the sanctuary and lobby of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 E. Lopez Ave., through Sunday.

These quilts were constructed throughout the year. The quilts will be blessed Sunday during the 9:30 a.m. worship service. They will be shipped to Lutheran World Relief headquarters Monday.

Lutheran World Relief presents the quilts to families in need around the world.

PORT ANGELES — Some 20 homecrafters and home-based vendors will be featured at the Elks Naval Lodge from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

A raffle drawing is planned at 4 p.m.

Veterans memorial

PORT ANGELES — The Marine Corps League, Mt. Olympus Detachment VFW, American Legion, Patriot Riders, National Guard and others will conduct a veterans memorial at 1 p.m. today.

The free, public event will be at Veterans Park on Lincoln Street at Third Street.

The names of all local veterans are read and a replica of the Liberty Bell is rung after each name. If possible, the American flag is folded and presented to a family member of one of the deceased.

An honor guard fires three volleys, a bagpiper performs and a bugler plays taps.

Rummage sale

PORT ANGELES — The Answer for Youth will conduct a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday.

The sale will be held in the alley at 535 E. First St.

SEQUIM

Dancing class

SEQUIM — The Olympic Mountain Cloggers will host an “oldies” workshop for members of its association at 9 a.m. Saturday.

“A Blast from the Past” will be above Doodlebugs, 138 W. Washington St.

It is free to all current members of the association and will cost $7 for nonmembers.

All skill levels are welcome.

Instructors will include clogging teachers Alberta Stamp and John Musser.

Stroke lecture

SEQUIM — A woman identified only as Azella will present a lecture about strokes at a brain injury support group meeting from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday.

The event is free and open to the public.

Azella will also speak about how she has dealt with the effects of a stroke for the past 11 years.

Storyteller at meeting

SEQUIM — The Newcomers’ Club’s monthly luncheon will feature a storyteller at noon Tuesday.

Elaine Grinnell, a Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe storyteller, will speak at the meeting in the Legends Room at the Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road.

The cost is $5 for the program and $20 for the lunch and program.

Socializing will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch and the presentation.

The menu will feature a fajita buffet with a choice of beef or chicken, cooked peppers, onions and seasonings.

It will also include black beans, Spanish rice, salsa, sour cream, flour tortillas, green salad, assorted dressings and a dessert of brownies.

SEQUIM — The Sequim Elks Lodge will host bingo games from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Players must be 18 or older.

Snacks and refreshments will be available.

All proceeds will go to the Elks scholarship program, charities supported by the Elks and lodge operating costs.

PORT TOWNSEND — A presentation about fake news and media literacy will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Port Townsend Community Center.

Peninsula College journalism instructor Rich Riski will speak at the community center, 620 Tyler St.

He will talk about how to understand the nature of legitimate news, sources, how the news is delivered and how to discern between legitimate and illegitimate news sources or whether a source is potentially click-bait or propaganda.
