Green thumbs to talk gardening planning calendars

PORT ANGELES — Local Master Gardeners Amanda Rosenberg, Muriel Nesbitt and Jan Danford will talk Thursday about a year’s growing season — from seed start to putting the garden to bed.

The free lecture, “Marking Your Garden Calendar,” will begin at noon in the county commissioners’ meeting room of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The trio will share seasonal gardening tips outlined by Master Gardener publications and other published articles that will help home gardeners plan their 2019 gardening seasons.

Rosenberg will discuss winter dormant and bare root plant care, seed selection and starts, and provide a demonstration of creating seed tapes.

A Master Gardener since 2008, Rosenberg is a member of the Education Committee and shares the 2014 Master Gardener of the Year Award with Audreen Williams. She volunteers with the Master Gardener Youth Enrichment Program and with the Boys & Girls Club’s Garden Club.

Nesbitt will discuss plant care during the late spring and summer growing season, including watering, fertilizing and heat requirements.

Nesbitt, who earned a doctorate in genetics from the University of Washington, retired from teaching biology at the University of California San Diego. She directed the Clallam County Master Gardener program from 2009 to 2012, chairs the Master Gardener Education Committee and frequently provides training on gardening on the Olympic Peninsula.

Danford will share fall gardening tips for preparing garden beds for the winter. She will highlight bulb planting, both outdoor bulbs that will bloom in spring and indoor forced amaryllis and paper whites that add color for the holidays.

The 2014 Master Gardener Intern and 2016 Master Gardener of the Year, Danford chairs the operating committee at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, volunteers with the Youth Enrichment Program and heads the Master Gardener effort at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club.

This presentation wraps up the 2018 Green Thumb Garden Tips education series. The 2019 season will begin Jan. 24, with a presentation on horticultural oils by Bob Cain.
