LETTER: Why are we supporting and encouraging homelessness in our city?

Reading through the Peninsula Daily News’ Voter’s Guide for the upcoming Port Angeles City Council positions, I address this point for the outgoing and incoming City Council members regarding the question of homelessness, and to the present Clallam County commissioners as well.

The Peninsula Housing Authority has moved Mount Angeles View residents (33 empty homes) to wherever and plans to replace those empty properties (homes) with spaces for more homeless or low-income families [“PA Housing Project Is Set To Begin, July Start Planned For Mount Angeles View,” PDN, June 14].

I believe that will allow more homeless or low-income families to move to Port Angeles, which will grow our city’s population.

Why are we allowing more homeless and low-income citizens to lean on our community rather than promoting income-producing self-providers to grow our community?

Why aren’t we promoting the effort to provide, and support more working/living wage opportunities into our local area who then provide additional revenue to our area rather than promoting more excuses for insulting the worker-bee citizens here at home?

Why are we supporting and encouraging homelessness in our city?

That just does not make good economic sense, in my opinion.

Is that our claim-to-fame reputation?

No intent of accusation here — just a question: Could there be any connection here locally between Clallam County having a higher rate of opiates use per capita over Jefferson and King counties and our local homeless population?

Port Angeles needs employment support, not more compassionate welfare.
