LETTER: Trump’s lack of sound foreign policy increasingly worrisome

As a member of the Jefferson County Citizens for Sound Foreign Policy, I am gravely concerned with the current administration’s lack of a strategic plan to guide our nation through the interconnected network of relationships with other world nations and for what appears to be a fly-by-night foreign policy.

The American press seems to be heaping praise on the president for flipping his stance to a more reasonable view of NATO and a change in his “love relationship” with Putin but shows little concern for his lack of an in-depth knowledge of world affairs.

In addition, he has given little support to filling vacancies in the State Department, leaving many foreign ambassadors wondering who to call if a crisis should occur in their relations with the U.S.

A policy of showing strength by lacking restraint in pulling the trigger can lead to serious mistakes, causing backlash and invoking unintended consequences.

Congress seems unwilling to do its constitutional duty to act as a check on Mr. Trump’s military approach to solving political problems by not serving as an appropriate check to his legislative power.

When will this administration develop a sound foreign policy that we can understand and depend upon to safely navigate this increasingly dangerous world?
