LETTER: Supports Winborn against Gardiner for DCD

Those of us in Clallam County have truly been fortunate the past three and a half years to have Mary Ellen Winborn working for us as the director of community development.

She has worked diligently to re-establish competence and confidence in the department, driven by a desire to bring excellence, fairness and customer service to land use, permitting and code enforcement.

Her challenger, Julie Gardiner, is spouse and employee of an attorney who has represented a California land developer suing the department for enforcing code that prohibits building a hotel-sized 30,000 square-foot structure in a residential area under the guise of a “bed and breakfast.”

I believe, the motivations for her candidacy are suspect and reek of conflict of interest, if elected.

By contrast, Mary Ellen is motivated by nothing more than a desire to continue her community-minded and common sense approach to development, promoting orderly and safe land use planning.

Her education, experience and excellent performance to date make her uniquely qualified to continue this important work.

Please join me in re-electing Mary Ellen Winborn to continue her efforts on our behalf as DCD.

Michael S. Maxwell,

Port Angeles
