LETTER: School tour was informative, fun in Port Angeles

Last week, I joined a group of citizens as guests of the Port Angeles School District on one of their now semi-annual school tours.

This tour was hosted by Superintendent Marty Brewer and included an introduction at the Central Services Building, a bus ride to Jefferson Elementary and then a student-guided tour of the school.

My hosts were Karley and Kaylee.

There was a tight timeline of about two hours and well worth my time.

It was very enlightening; there were lots of “fun facts.”

We saw the new security system that offers significant security without being intrusive.

We learned about an individual learning program called Response to Intervention.

We visited classrooms filled with eager learners.

We learned about the volunteer WatchDOGS — Dads of Great Students — program and we visited with the school counselor. Each elementary school now has one.

Before the bus trip back to Central Services we enjoyed lunch with students.

It was emphasized that we got no special treatment regarding food choices.

We ate what the students ate and it was nutritious and well-served.

The next tour will be in the fall and will include Stevens Middle School.

These are open to the public and the district is hoping to see a big turnout for this ongoing series.

I would encourage anyone wanting to learn about our great schools to attend.
