LETTER: Save the sequoia, don’t cut it down

Save the sequoia

My name is Devon Graywolf, I am on the Port Angeles Tree Advisory Council.

We vehemently oppose the city’s current plan to destroy our healthy sequoia tree in Lions Park.

We created an alternative plan which is to designate our sequoia as a heritage, historical tree in honor of President Abraham Lincoln.

Lincoln, on June 19, 1862, established Port Angeles as the national capital of a slavery-free America in the event the Union was defeated.

Mount Baker has peaks named after Civil War heroes Lincoln, Grant, Seward and Sherman.

One year later, Lincoln signed a bill protecting the giant sequoia of California, granting the trees “inalienable rights” for the people to enjoy for all time.

Several of the sequoia are also named after Civil War heroes.

We propose a community commemorative celebration to place a plaque near our sequoia honoring President Lincoln and our tree.

We envision performing this ceremony June 19, 2019.

Happy birthday, Port Angeles, 157 years old.

“Laughter is the everlasting evergreen of life.” — Abraham Lincoln.

Devon Graywolf,
