LETTER: Proposed I-1639 poorly drafted, won’t accomplish goals

I read with interest the article of Oct. 8 entitled “Focused on gun violence.”

After reviewing Initiative 1639, I have become convinced this initiative is a poorly drafted abomination that will not accomplish its goals.

It is simply an attempt by the anti-gun element to make criminals out of law-abiding citizens.

There is absolutely nothing commonsense about this initiative except perhaps its goal of keep firearms out of the hands of those who should not have them.

The article cites the Parkland shooting in Florida to support the position that a more comprehensive background check is needed and would have prevented Nikolas Cruz, the alleged shooter, from purchasing the firearm used in the shooting.

Nothing is further from the truth.

The information which should have prevented him from purchasing the firearm was available but simply was not acted on properly.

A law was already in place.

The law was not effective simply because law enforcement at the federal, state and local level did not do their jobs.

Nor was the local school district effective due to an excess of political correctness.

Unenforced laws are ineffective laws.

If a new law would solve this complex problem, I would be first in line to support it.

It will not and I do not.

Initiative 1639 will do nothing to deter criminal gun use but it will make criminals out of honest citizens.
