LETTER: Now is the time to support I-1631

Did you happen to notice who funded the flier with information on initiative I-1631 that we received in the mail a couple of weeks ago?

In case you didn’t, it was the Western States Petroleum Association, the major opponents of the initiative.

However, there is a coalition of other organizations that support the initiative including unions, environmental groups, tribes and faith groups.

My question for the rest of us is just who do we think is going to pay to clean up our air, land and water if the fossil fuel companies, and yes, probably those of us who use fossil fuels, don’t?

We got ourselves into this predicament by years and years of indiscriminate use of these fuels, out of convenience as well as necessity.

Now the whole planet and its wondrous webs of life and ecosystems of amazement are teetering on the brink of disastrous dysfunction, at least for human life, and lots of other life, to continue.

Don’t we think its time someone calls a halt, is willing to say, “I prefer life” and gets on with the job of the years and years necessary for healing?

We’ve all been complicit, especially fossil fuel companies whose bottom lines seem to be profits rather than livable climate.

This initiative has been hammered out over several years and has amazing support.

If we don’t start now, when will we?

What will it take to get you on board with the healing that is necessary for life on Earth?

Pat Milliren,

Port Angeles
