LETTER: Need to support people more than barriers

I’m pleased to hear that the city council has voted to put up barriers on the Eighth Street bridges. (“Port Angeles council adds bridge barriers to plans,” PDN, Dec. 6)

As this is a just a way to help prevent people from jumping off the bridges, it is not a way of fixing what is going on in people’s lives.

There needs to be other resources available, easily accessible for young adults to seek out in need of help.

The city as a whole needs to help support these people and be open to understanding that people hide their emotions.

It is hard for families to accept the fact that their child has depression as many of their emotions are due to the fluctuating perception of their hormones.

Having a behavioral psychologist who could be easy to reach would help young adults in confronting their emotional problems.

Why don’t we as a community fix what is happening on the inside of someone we know rather than trying to fix the object that helps them commit suicide?
