LETTER: Jefferson County already collects money for housing fund

Jefferson County residents, before you vote on Prop. 1, you should be aware that the county has for several years been collecting monies that goes to an affordable housing and homeless fund, amounting to over $240,000 a year.

Part of the charge for most deeds and other documents recorded in Jefferson County goes into this fund.

Now the county wants only homeowners to cough up more money with Proposition 1.

So how much is enough when the county is collecting $240,000 already just from the documents being filed?

There are other avenues for those people who want to help.

The PDN has a home fund.

Why can’t Jefferson County do something similar?

A sales tax increase seems a more equitable avenue.

Also, actively seeking businesses to relocate here that pay sustainable wages.

I don’t see evidence of that happening.

I don’t know where other monies are being collected for affordable housing/homelessness, but I bet there are other areas besides the deeds.

Please vote “no” on Prop 1 in Jefferson County.
