LETTER: Doherty does ‘big, important things’

Real Mike Doherty

Let me tell you about the real Mike Doherty.

My wife has counted him as a friend since high school, 60 years now.

I have known him for more than 25 years.

Mike Doherty cares about people.

He does big, important things and acts one-on-one when help is needed or for something he remembers about you.

He’ll loan a book you didn’t even ask for or make sure you know about a helpful resource.

Doherty is like the advertising slogan: He knows a thing or two because he’s done a thing or two.

His Clallam service began with chairing the board of freeholders that established the county charter in 1976.

When the voters then recalled two commissioners, Doherty was appointed to the board of county commissioners by then Governor Evans, and in one of his first acts won the appointment of Rosemary Cockrill of Port Angeles to serve as the county’s first female commissioner.

He chaired the county board in 2001-02, 2005-06 and 2006-12; chaired the Clallam Transit System board three times, the U.S. Forest Service Resource Advisory Committee (2002-14), the North Olympic Peninsula Resource Conservation and Development Council (2001-12), and served as president of the Port Angeles School District board (1995-98).

Doherty cares about the entire third district and plans to resume “West End Wednesdays” when he visits communities from Forks to Neah Bay.

No candidate comes close to Mike Doherty’s qualifications or experience, let alone his record for evenhanded and fiscally responsible leadership.

John Merton Marrs,

Port Angeles
