LETTER: Deputy’s actions are embarrassment to sheriff’s office

Deputy embarrassment

First, I would like to say that I believe, overall, we have an excellent Clallam County Sheriff’s Office with excellent leadership.

I have known several deputies over the 34 years I’ve lived in this county and they are all honest, level-headed, thoughtful individuals.

However, the fact that Deputy Michael Leiter showed such bad judgment when he repeatedly texted an alleged victim of domestic violence to solicit sex and he is now back at work after a 30 day suspension, worries me. (“Clallam County deputy disciplined for inappropriate texts with alleged victim of domestic violence,” PDN, March 1)

It worries me as a woman who would hope that a sheriff could be trusted to protect me and not further victimize me.

It worries me that at a time that Deputy Leiter had time to contemplate his actions, he then violated office policy and proceeded to repeatedly contact a victim inappropriately.

What will happen when he has to make a split-second decision that perhaps involves firearms?

Leiter’s actions are an embarrassment to the Sheriff’s Office and hopefully will not become a liability or danger in the future.

Lyell Fox,

Sequim
