LETTER: Democrat voting for Nichols in Clallam County

Voting for Nichols

The unfortunate aspect of the race for prosecuting attorney is that it is labeled partisan.

It shouldn’t be.

It is about established laws, not shifting political values.

It is about fair processes to uphold laws, ability to collaborate with other law enforcement agencies, victims’ rights and the accused’s rights.

We are seeing firsthand at a federal level how vulnerable we would be if prosecuting offices allowed themselves to become politicized.

I am a registered Democrat and lean toward values of the party, but like to think I make informed decisions in local elections of candidates based on the candidate’s demonstrated standards and competence for the position.

I am endorsing Mark Nichols for the office of prosecuting attorney of Clallam.

I worked with him around a forum held last February on sexual abuse toward and among teens and saw firsthand how he approaches his job.

Childhood sexual abuse is a difficult and sensitive issue and must be managed carefully for the sake of the accused and the victim.

I learned about the legal processes and support system put in place for both in our county and the additional work on Mark’s part done to support efforts for prevention of the crime of childhood sexual abuse.

Mark demonstrated an analytical approach and an ability to articulate his findings. Mark Nichols deserves to be re-elected as prosecuting attorney of our county.
