LETTER: Corporations not people, money is not speech

In our 2016 state general election, almost 65 percent of us in Clallam County spoke with a united voice on Initiative 735.

It passed with 63 percent in all 10 of our congressional districts.

This initiative called on present and future Washington state delegations to Congress to propose, then ratify, a joint resolution for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which clarifies that corporations are not people and money cannot be considered as speech for the purpose of elections.

Our state’s I-735 is closely aligned with HJR 48.

Fifty-two members of the U.S. House have signed onto HJR 48.

More members of Congress need to cosponsor HJR 48.

We need a U.S. senator to introduce a companion bill.

Sens. Patty Murray or Maria Cantwell could prove that they respond to the will of their constituents by introducing the companion bill to HJR 48 in the Senate.

If you agree that big money, multi-national corporations and billionaires now wield too much power over our elections and legislation, please demand our senators follow the will of Washingtonians by introducing a companion bill to HJR 48.

Cantwell, who is now running for reelection, should consider this seriously.

Both senators should also consider supporting Bernie’s [Sanders] Medicare for All Act in the Senate if they want my vote.

I’ve had enough of excuses and know I am one of many.

Andrea Radich,

Port Angeles
