LETTER: Congress has the power to end a shutdown

Congress accountable

As we continue to vilify the president and the Democratic Party for the government shutdown, while thousands of our neighbors and fellow citizens are being hung out to dry, let us remember that Congress has the authority to end the shutdown now, by themselves and with or without the president’s approval. [Article 1, Section 7 of the U.S. Constitution, which permits a presidential veto override with at least two-thirds approving].

Some of those affected by the shutdown will probably recover their lost wages but many will not and all will have borne some cost.

Neither the president nor any member of Congress will miss a paycheck.

We need to hold our elected representatives in Congress to account and demand that they act now to end this nonsense.

Tom Coonelly,
