LETTER: City committee only willing to pass the buck

Last week, I attended a disappointing meeting of the Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Committee.

The agenda was to find a solution to the continued desecration of the Veterans Memorial Park.

It was well-attended by many veterans who believe that a security fence needs to be erected.

The opposition constantly made excuses for the vandals’ actions and seemed to blame society.

Many have witnessed drug sales and use, sex, panhandling and littering there.

The aftermath is a memorial site that is covered with used needles, human feces, trash and urine smell.

One suggestion was to have more trash cans.

Really?

One absurd suggestion was to move the Liberty Bell.

The biggest problem is drugs which is tearing our country apart.

That problem will continue until we, the people, demand tougher laws and strict enforcement of them.

Some of the passive solutions voiced at the meeting are well and good but will take months and years to implement.

In the meantime, our park will continue to be vandalized and will remain an eyesore.

Do we want to be another Seattle or San Francisco?

The committee’s solution was no solution at all.

The committee decided to form a sub-committee instead.

Most of the comments that I overheard after the meeting were referring to “passing the buck.”
