LETTER: Bag ban just start of cleaning up

My gratitude goes to those taking leadership regarding a ban on plastic bags.

We should be able to make the relatively small adjustment of giving up plastic bags.

We could think of any inconvenience as our own gift when we are so gifted with natural beauty.

But that should inspire us to do much more.

Litter on the ground, in streams and saltwater, and even up in trees degrades our quality of life and must be repulsive to the tourists who are so important to our economy.

Let’s look for the best ideas locally and from other cities to deal with the unnecessary ugliness of litter.

Here are some ideas to consider:

• Businesses that sell fast food in throw-away containers could generate good will to help offset their garbage.

• They could adopt their neighborhoods and send employees out regularly to try to keep the mess from traveling where it’s harder to clean up.

• Individuals and groups might want to adopt other areas where litter problems are greatest.

We can live up to our beautiful natural surroundings instead of continuing to live with so much litter.
