LETTER: Authorities won’t acknowledge deadly truth of Fukushima

We are done with Fukushima.

I am not a wildlife biologist or a physicist, but I have visited the Elwha River almost every week since March of 2013.

I have observed that in 2017 almost no salmon swam up river.

Where are they?

I was working on an island in the mid-Pacific in March of 2013.

With me was a physician who was an Army-trained expert in nuclear and radiological medicine.

He predicted in the months that followed the Fukushima meltdowns that the Pacific Ocean’s fisheries down current of the nuclear radiation would be destroyed in time.

That time may have come.

At what point will our public officials admit that?

At what point will all of us living “downwind” or “down current” decide that we won’t or can’t live with the increased cancer rates that will surely follow?

Who will risk their children’s future health?

What will your home and property be worth?

You know the answer.

I hate to sound like a Cock Robin.

The sky is not falling.

But, my fellow citizens, please do not accept the word of the Japanese government or that of our own government.

Neither wants to acknowledge the truth.

Ray Sturdevant,

Port Angeles
