Tales for those yearning for spring to be told Friday in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — Allison Cox of Vashon Island will tell “The Quickening: Stories of the Rekindling of Life” during First Friday Story Night this weekend.

Chris Gilbert of the Quimper Storytelling Guild will host the evening of stories from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Friends Meetinghouse, 1841 Sheridan St. The suggested donation is $10.

Following Cox’s program will be an open mic section in which signed-up attendees engage the oral tradition through their sharing of stories, songs and words of poetry.

“If you too are aching for spring, then join us for ancient and modern stories that are sure to warm your heart and bring the longed for light back into your life,” said Perry Spring of the Quimper Storytelling Guild, an organizer of the evening.

Gilbert will close the evening with a couple of tales and songs from his repertoire that reflect the evening’s theme.

Through stories, Cox will explore the question of “how do the celebrations of the first days of February connect through time?”

With myth, legend, personal story and song, Allison will share how Imbolc, Candlemas and Groundhog Day are all aspects of the same tale of the Goddess Brigid … and her influence today.

Cox has performed internationally as a storyteller for more than 36 years.

She is the author-editor of the Healing Heart books, a founder and coordinator of the Healing Story Alliance and editor of their journal — and now serves as a board member of the Seattle Storytellers Guild.

Originally from Chicago, Cox fell in love with the Northwest and has been sharing her own small corner of Vashon Island with the local wildlife for 28 years.

More information is at her webpage at www.dancingleaves.com/allison.

First Friday Story Night [FFSN] is a monthly event that explores the art and ritual of the oral tradition, sharing old myths, folk tales and fairy tales, along with first person and modern stories.

After eight years at Better Living Through Coffee, the Friends’ Meetinghouse is providing FFSN its new home for the 2017-18 season.

Initiated in 2009 by Brian Rohr, FFSN continued from 2013 through 2017 under the stewardship of Aimee Ringle. The Quimper Storytelling Guild is carrying forward the program.

The featured teller on March 2 will be Rebecca Hom of Olympia.
